Three Simple Things You Can Do to Strengthen Your Security

Tightening the security of your systems can feel like a daunting task. Maybe you're worried you don't have the resources or budget to do it yourself. Or maybe you don't know where to start from because of all of the different things that need your attention – firewalls, VPNs, encryption, proxies and even more acronyms.

Don't worry; we're about to make it feel like less work!

First things first: listen to how your team is sharing data, accessing systems, and how easily things are accessible physically. Just remaining aware will bring to your attention large holes in your security.

Here's a few tips of what to look for:

  • How is your team sharing information internally and externally (vendors, clients, etc.)?

  • Are the methods they're using to share data secure? For instance, do their logins have multi-factor authentication? Are they using personal accounts as oppose to tools and accounts tied to your organization that are controlled?

Second thing: make the simple changes. Ensure applications are using multi-factor authentication, implement advanced threat detection tools for email (like Datapath's), and get an assessment from a professional cyber firm (again, like Datapath) that will give you a report of areas of concern.

Third thing: implement EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response). This is an inexpensive service from the right firms (like Datapath), and covers the majority of threat points. These tools often have heavy automation but serve as a great stop-gap prior to implementing full security monitoring.

When you're done with these: consider a full-service managed security services provider. These are firms that will monitor all of your devices, provide EDR for any new threats, and make sure you’re getting the best possible protection for your organization.
