Ransomware Attacks on K-12 Trend Down, Higher Ed Trend Up in 2026

This week’s K-12 technology news points to a school IT environment becoming more structured, not less demanding. Ransomware activity against K-12 schools declined, but cybersecurity coordination is expanding at the same time. Ransomware volume is down, but the risk is still material. Comparitech found that ransomware attacks against K-12 schools worldwide fell 26% in the first half of 2026 compared with the latter half of 2025. That improvement should be read alongside the report’s finding that higher education attacks moved in the opposite direction: attackers continue to adjust their focus across the education sector. 1

School cybersecurity information sharing is gaining institutional support. K12 SIX joined the National Council of ISACs, expanding coordination designed to help K-12 organizations anticipate, identify, and respond to cyber threats before they cause harm.
